APEC CD is an unique public-private engagement platform which is currently represented by 21 economies. The provision of these direct outreach opportunities through APEC CD has facilitated the discussions on common issues and concerns encountered by the global chemical industry on trade and trade-related regulatory policy development within APEC member economies. Economies are also able to collaborate and leverage on each other available resources to achieve synergistic outcomes.

Beyond the key focus on health, safety, environment and security issues of the chemical industry, the sustainability related concerns and SAICM (Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management) are emerging areas of active discussions among the APEC economies.

Singapore through SCIC has been active in our participation and contribution in the various Committees/Workgroups under APEC CD and taking pro-active leadership role in driving the programmes and activities. The involvements included:

  • APEC CD Virtual Workgroup (VWG) on data exchange – SCIC leads as the VWG as Industry Co-chair with Russia (CIS)
  • APEC CD Virtual Workgroup (VWG) on Globally Harmonised System (GHS) – SCIC leads as the VWG as Co-chair
  • APEC CD Virtual Workgroup (VWG) on Regulatory co-operation & convergence – SCIC participates as active member.

In the recent APEC CD SOM-3 meeting held from 22 to 23 August 2002 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the meeting discussed and approved the concept notes that drive GHS implementation alignment including the concept note by Singapore on GHS Implementation Convergence Practices and the concept note by Indonesia on developing Preparation Checklist and Guidance on How to Upgrade to Higher GHS Version.
