Synergising Chemical Industry’s efforts towards sustainability
As an energy-intensive sector consuming over 10% of Singapore total daily usage of water, the Chemical Industry places as one of the highest water consumption industries with Jurong Island alone utilising 47 million gallons of water per day. In view of Singapore’s target of reducing its emissions intensity by 36% from 2005 levels by 2030, the industry has responded by seeking alternative energy sources and reducing carbon emission, among other initiatives, to combat climate change.
Through SCIC where we come together as an industry in driving sustainability efforts, the ERSC will complement industry initiatives towards addressing issues of climate change including energy efficiency, carbon emission, greenhouse gases emission and waste management.
This will further support EDB’s Energy and Chemical’s Industry Transformation Roadmap and other national initiatives on climate change as well as the drive towards a zero-waste nation.
About Standards Development Organisation (SDO)@SCIC
SCIC has been appointed as the Standards Development Organisation (SDO@SCIC) since April 2011 to manage the Chemical Standards Committee (CSC). This is one of the 11 Standards Committees under the National Standardisation Programme led by the Singapore Standards Council administered by Enterprise Singapore. The CSC drives standards projects in the key areas of LNG bunkering & fuel oil bunkering, surface coatings, chemicals & processes, nanotechnology as well as petroleum processes and products. The additional management of ESRC by SDO@SCIC covering the key areas on water, energy, waste and environment will further strengthen and support the chemical and related industries in their journey towards sustainable development.
