WSH Leadership Convention: ChemPact 2024
At the recently held 𝗪𝗦𝗛 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗣𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, we explored how ownership, leadership, mentorship, and stewardship are crucial pillars in attaining high WSH standards. This was shared by Mr Lim Keng Yang, Chairman of the WSH Council (Chemical Industries) Committee, in his opening address.
✍️During the Convention, 27 companies signed the WSH Commitment, cementing high WSH standards in their company policies and practices, namely to:
▪️Be a bizSAFE Partner or a company that requires minimum bizSAFE 3 or equivalent for their contractors;
▪️Assign weightage on WSH or prioritise companies with strong WSH records for tender evaluations;
▪️Disqualify unsafe contractors from contracts or provide mentoring to unsafe contractors; and
▪️Empower workers (including contractors) the right to stop unsafe work and have an internal reporting system.
As shared by Mr Mashhad Dohadwala, General Manager (Jurong Island) of Shell, it is essential for companies to have a sound safety track record so that they may be favoured by service buyers. In doing so, they are likely to qualify for contracts from large companies and be able to grow their revenue.
💡To facilitate cross-learning, several companies also shared their proactive leadership in enhancing WSH. In PCS Pte. Ltd. they partnered their contractors to implement HSE programmes, and have helped them achieved bizSAFE Star certification or bizSAFE Partner status. For Infineum, their leadership established a safety-oriented culture by implementing WSH initiatives such as recognising workers and teams for their exceptional WSH performance.
