World Environment Day Beach Clean-Up

As an industry, we are all aware of the surmounting plastic waste issues globally. This is evident in the declaration of plastic waste as a central theme at the United Nations World Environment Day in 2018. Nevertheless, it should be said that plastics was never the issue for mankind as plastics has improved the way we live our life and provided many solutions for issues relating to climate change, energy, water and food security.

A global concern today, we recognise that we need to adopt a pro-active approach towards plastic waste issues to demonstrate our commitment towards environment protection. Recognising the importance of collaborative efforts, we have embarked on a series of engagement with NEA and MOE with the aim to augment public awareness on the responsible use of plastics and plastics recycling in Singapore.

To demonstrate the Chemical Industry’s commitment towards environmental protection and to keeping our shores and waters free of waste, SCIC has embarked on the “Clear Shores, Clean Waters” campaign.

On 31 May 2019, we came together on the World Environment Day in #pullingourweight to #endplasticwaste together at East Coast Park. Over 2 hours of beach combing, the collective efforts, hard work and sweat from 170 enthusiastic volunteers from 10 member companies collected a total of 856 kg of litter of which 508.50 kg and 356.50 kg were plastics trash and general trash respectively.

SCIC would like to thank all members for their support in the "Clear Shores Clear Waters" campaign and we look forward to having more member companies to join us in the International Coastal Clean-up happening on 20 Sept 2019.

Look out for more information from SCIC!
