The Environment and Resources Standards Exchange on Energy Management was held on 19 March 2021 with more than 180 attendees from over 100 organisations. The Exchange touched on ISO 50001 and relevant standards such as ISO 50004 and ISO 50006.

SS ISO 50001: 2018 “Energy management systems — Requirements with guidance for use” specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (EnMS). It was adopted as a Singapore Standard to enable organisations to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance and the EnMS.

Having a robust EnMS is crucial as it builds upon the monitoring and analysis required under the Energy Conservation Act by the National Environment Agency, so as to strengthen the ability of an organisation to mobilise its resources to improve energy performance. Besides fulfilling regulatory requirements, an effective EnMS also helps organisations shift their focus from improving energy efficiency on a best-effort basis to a more directed approach working towards outcome and ensures commitment from different functions and levels to work together and contribute towards a common goal.

Some benefits of implementing an EnMS using ISO 50001 include:

  1. Higher energy efficiency improvement rate
  2. Increased competitiveness of companies due to ISO 50001’s international recognition
  3. Increased productivity
  4. Better employee motivation and culture of continual improvement
  5. Enhanced marketing value and corporate image
  6. Improved environmental sustainability

The standards discussed during the Standards Exchange are useful for energy managers, facility managers, engineers, consultants, relevant authorities and any other users who are keen to implement or improve their organisations’ current EnMS. Additional resources can be found below.
