The Singapore Standard SS 5 Methods of test for paints, varnishes and related materials, a series of 51 parts, consolidates the various test methods relating to paints and varnishes. The updates of SS 5 series were shared at the webinar on 9 November 2020.

The Technical Committee for Surface Coatings, under the purview of Chemical Standards Committee, supports the paint industry by overseeing the Singapore Standards for decorative paints and road marking paints.

To keep abreast with the latest industry trends and technology for paint products, testing and procedures, the Working Group for SS 5, which reports to the Technical Committee for Surface Coatings, was tasked to review the SS 5 test methods series.

The SS 5 series was developed as means to support the local paint industry from testing laboratories, paint suppliers and manufacturers, contractor, consultants, architects to industry associations and relevant government agencies.

Review outcome of SS 5 series:

The following SS 5 Parts were withdrawn from the series:

  1. SS 5 Part B16 – Determination of viscosity by the Brookfield viscometer (replaced by SS 5 Part B17)
  2. SS 5 Part D3 – Hard-drying time (replaced by SS 5 Part D6)
  3. SS 5 Part F4 – Abrasion resistance by falling abrasive
  4. SS 5 Part G9 – Artificial weathering and exposure to artificial radiation – Exposure to filtered xenon-arc radiation (replaced by SS 5 Part G11 and G12)

The 5 new test methods that were introduced in the latest edition of the SS 5 series are:

  1. SS 5 Part A5 – Lighting and procedure for visual assessments of coatings
  2. SS 5 Part B17 – Determination of viscosity by the rotational viscometer
  3. SS 5 Part D6 – Hard dry time – Test using a mechanical recorder
  4. SS 5 Part G11 – Methods of exposure to laboratory light sources – General guidance
