The Standards Development Organisation at SCIC (SDO@SCIC) successfully held the Seminar on TR 138 – Use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for oil, gas, chemical and industrial processing facilities, and related pipeline corridors on 16 July 2025.
With the increasing adoption of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) across various industries, TR 138 was developed to provide structured guidance for the safe and effective use of UAS in complex and high-risk operational environments such as chemical plants, refineries, and energy installations. These worksites often present elevated risks, and the deployment of UAS can help enhance inspection, surveillance, and monitoring activities while reducing human exposure to hazards.
TR 138 outlines practical requirements and recommendations covering areas such as operational planning, risk management, safety protocols, personnel competency, and regulatory considerations. It aims to support industries in adopting UAS technologies responsibly while ensuring alignment with safety and regulatory requirements.
The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders including UAS service providers, asset owners, operators, regulators, and technical experts. Attendees were provided with an overview of the Technical Reference, followed by presentations and discussions on implementation considerations, industry use cases, and operational challenges. The session also served as a platform to foster cross-sectoral dialogue and promote awareness on the importance of structured standards in supporting technological adoption in safety-critical environments.
