SCIC Major Hazard Installation (MHI) Practitioners’ Forum 2024 –  Application of Bowtie for Risk Assessment in Chemical Industry

The SCIC MHI Practitioners’ Forum was held on 1 February 2024 on the interesting topic, ‘Application of Bowtie for Risk Assessment in Chemical Industry’. The forum saw an approximate of 120 participants who are keen to learn and apply bowtie for risk assessment in their workplace.

The forum provided an overview on the Bowtie Analysis Framework and case studies of bowtie application. Bowtie is a pictorial representation of how a hazard can be released through the realisation of multiple threats and what the consequences could be. It provides clear representation of the outputs from risk assessment and management process.

Through the forum, participants learnt the definitions of ‘top event’, ‘hazard’ ‘threats’, ‘barrier’ etc, which formed the components of the bowtie. One of the speakers did a demonstration on Bowtie drawing software tools.

The MHI Practitioner Forum proved to be a valuable platform for industry professionals to exchange knowledge and insights on improving current practices. Stay tuned for future forums scheduled in 2024.
