It is the belief of Responsible Care® signatories that the chemical industry’s knowledge in improving their Health, Safety, Environment and Security performance can be effectively enhanced through sharing of good practices and learning from one another.

As the programme administrator for the Responsible Care® programme in Singapore, SCIC organised various events annually to provide the chemical industry members a platform of mutual sharing and learning. Such events were well attended by members who have benefitted from the exclusive network of experiences sharing by fellow industry peers.

Leadership commitment by Responsible Care® signatories is the key driver that has enabled SCIC’s efforts in advocating and bringing values of Responsible Care® practices to the practitioners.

We were proud to have the support from the Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore (PCS) in representing Singapore to speak at the 3rd Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association (GPCA) Responsible Care® Conference 2019, held in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, from 14-16 October 2019.

Theme “Responsible Care® – Celebrating a Decade of Excellence”, the conference showcased best regional learnings across the chemical and petrochemical sector and define the future direction for Responsible Care® companies in the region.

As a passionate leader and advocate, Er. Lucas Ng, General Manager (Plant) of PCS shared with the conference delegates some good practices and experiences of Responsible Care implementation which have provided valuable insights to the conference delegates. PCS was the first and only company who has qualified to receive the SCIC Responsible Care Leadership Award when this new award category was introduced in 2015 to recognise companies who have demonstrated their continued outstanding performance in the Responsible Care programme.

Dr Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General of GPCA expressed his appreciation to Er. Ng for the excellent presentation which has received favourable feedbacks from the audience.

Er. Ng was also very encouraged by the GPCA member companies’ progress in the implementation of the Responsible Care® programme over a short span of 10 years. In sharing his post conference thoughts, it was evident from the presentations by the various leaders on their enthusiasm and drive in the continuous improvement through Responsible Care’s spirit.

He further shared his learnings from the key takeaways from the conference with the following focuses:

  1. Process Safety – Significant emphasis on process safety aspect together with occupational safety in eliminating incidents.

  2. Circular Economy – Besides water reclamation, there is an increasing emphasis on recycling, reusing, minimising and converting waste to energy. Discussion also took place on education efforts to drive improvement in plastic handling and disposal behaviour to address waste pollution issues.

  3. Energy & Global Warming - Energy efficiency and optimal use of energy resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

SCIC would like to acknowledge PCS and Er. Ng for their commitment as leaders and look forward to the continuous support from its members to bring the chemical industry’s HSES performances to greater heights through the Responsible Care® programme.
