Update: Webinar on Revised SS 542 : 2020 Code of practice for the painting of building

SS 542 : 2020 was first published as CP 22 in 1981. It was first revised and re-numbered as SS 542 in 2008. SS 542 : 2020 is the second revision of the standard.

Due to Covid-19, the physical seminar of revised SS 542 was postponed and subsequently converted into a webinar. The webinar of revised SS 542 : 2020 Code of practice for the painting of building held on 19 Feb 2021, with more than 80 attendees at the webinar.

Publication of Revised SS 542 : 2020 Code of Practice for the painting of buildings

Managed by the SDO@SCIC, the Technical Committee on Surface Coatings tasked a Working Group to review the SS 542 : 2008 Code of practice for the painting of buildings. The revised SS 542 was reviewed by multi-stakeholder committees comprising of the government agencies, paint manufacturers, architects, building surveyors and laboratories. Feedback from public and industry consultations were taken on board during the review of this standard. 

Scope of SS 542 : 2020 Code of Practice for the painting of buildings

This Code of Practice for the painting of buildings is a Singapore Standard that provides guidance and recommend good practice for the design, application and maintenance of decorative paint systems for use by the paint industry. The key areas of this standard cover the current practices in the construction industry in Singapore.

Benefits of SS 542

This Code of Practice provides practical guidance and recommendations for specifiers in the preparation of painting specifications to meet the needs of different project contracts. SS 542 serves as a guide for architects and applicators to achieve good quality painting on site. The standard provides facility managers and building owners information on the different paint system, selection criteria and application process which can serve as initial guidance for painting project. The standard enhances painting process by providing information on surface preparation for different substrates which are useful for paint manufacturers and applicators. Recommendations set out in this standard helps to reduce painting defects and the need for rework which translates to lower cost and higher productivity.

Major changes to the standard

This standard is a revision of SS 542 : 2008. In this revision, major changes were made to the Standard to reflect the current practices in the construction industry in Singapore.

Major changes to SS 542 include:

1) Engineered timber is increasingly used in construction of buildings and recommendation of its use have been included.

2) Painting on substrates such as plastic, glass and ceramics have also been included.

3) The preparation of painting specifications has been included to help users understand that the painting process starts from getting the right painting specification.

New recommendations included:

1) The environmental performance of environmental-friendly paint products and services are certified by local green certification bodies.

2) Addition of the following clause with localisation:
    Clause 6: General description of paints, related materials and treatments
    Clause 7: Systems for the painting of buildings
    Clause 8: Paint application.
