Empowering the Maritime Future: A Focus on TR 129 and ISO 6583
On 26 March 2025, the Standards Development Organisation at the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SDO@SCIC) hosted a seminar titled "Sailing Towards Sustainability – New Standards for Marine Alternative Fuels: Sharing of Singapore TR 129 and ISO 6583" at the Suntec Convention Centre. The event focused on the pivotal role of standards in advancing methanol bunkering and maritime sustainability.
During the seminar, experts from the working groups involved in developing of Technical Reference (TR) 129 and ISO 6583 provided insights into these standards. TR 129 offers comprehensive guidelines for the safe and efficient use of methanol as an alternative fuel in bunkering operations, covering custody transfer requirements, operational and safety protocols, and crew training competencies. ISO 6583 defines the specifications for methanol as a fuel for marine applications.
The development of TR 129 was a collaborative effort involving government agencies, research institutes, and industry stakeholders, including bunker suppliers, craft operators, engine manufacturers, testing and certification bodies, as well as shipowners and operators. This collective initiative supports the maritime industry's transition to sustainable alternative fuels and reinforces Singapore's position as a leading multi-fuel bunkering hub.
