As part of the SCIC Advanced Manufacturing (SAM) committee's initiatives to prepare the industry in gearing up for Industry 4.0, a physical workshop on "Design Thinking" was organised on 16 April 2021 for the Chemical Industry. The workshop was attended by 13 participants from different chemical companies. The participants were provided with valuable insights into "Design Thinking" concepts, including applying user empathy, identifying needs statement and solutions for organisational transformation towards Industry 4.0.

During the hands-on exercise of the workshop, participants were able to apply the design thinking framework and tools on a project to help them identify opportunities for innovation and intervention within their organisation. A focus on human-centricity has enabled participants to better appreciate the user's needs and opportunities before the generation of ideas.

Participants saw the value of co-creating the ideas with users to ensure that the solutions addressed the needs of their target audience/s. At the end of the workshop, the participants recapped and reflected upon the "Design Thinking" principles on human-centric. This was one of their key takeaways, which the training has equipped them with the knowledge and skillsets in applying it within their organisation.
