Singapore’s participation in championing the standards work at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has led to the development and publication of ISO 46001 on “Water efficiency management systems — Requirements with guidance for use”. The standard was based on local standard, SS 577.
Water is an essential element for the sustainable development of Singapore. The publication of SS ISO 46001 covers ways to mitigate the water demands in Singapore, which includes using water more efficiently in organisations that use water in their processes through a systematic management of water.
SS ISO 46001 adopts a Plan-Do-Check-Act framework to help organisations assess and account for their water usage, and to identify, plan and implement measures to achieve water savings.
SS ISO 46001 will enable environmental consultants, owners of buildings and any professionals involved in or responsible for water management in their organisations to use the standard to develop and implement a water efficiency management policy and establish objectives, targets and action plans for their water usage.
The chemical industry is a water-intensive sector which uses water supply for several purposes ranging from raw material, solvent, product cleaning, heating or cooling to transportation. Hence, water efficiency management can also aid organisations in promoting sustainable economic activities, industries and ultimately achieving a sustainable environment.
