The Singapore Petrochemical Complex HSE Campaign is held annually, with the primary objective of creating and elevating Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) awareness among employees and contractors. This year’s campaign was organised by the Complex HSE Campaign Organising Committee led by Dow Chemical Pacific with support from the Companies in the Singapore Petrochemical Complex including Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore (Private) Limited (PCS).
As part of an on-going effort to promote and create greater awareness on “Vision Zero” movement, the campaign theme set for this year is “Safety On the Go, Vision Zero Our Goal”. This campaign aims to reach out to all employees and contractors and bring everyone on board to embrace a mind-set that all work-related injuries and ill-health are preventable and a belief that zero harm is possible.
The Opening Ceremony of the Campaign was held on 4th Jul 2019 at the PCS Contractors Rest Shed. About 800 attendees comprising Complex companies’ and contractors’ management, Complex staff, contractor workers and esteemed guests from the Ministry of Manpower, WSH Council, Jurong Island Vision Zero Working Group turned up at the event. It was indeed heartening to see such a good turn out with strong support from the government agencies and the industry workgroups.
Dow Chemical Pacific Country Manager, Mr. Paul Fong, in his opening address highlighted that Safety is a common ground that binds everyone together despite all our differences. He urged everyone to conscientiously practice safety at all times and go home safely to our loved ones as each has roles to play apart from our day job. Lastly, he summarised the safety commitment in five words – “protect our people and planet” and reminded us to protect and keep our loved ones safe including ourselves.
Guest-of-Honour, Ms. Kala Anandarajah, Deputy Chairperson of WSH Council in her keynote address elaborated on the Campaign theme “Vision Zero” and urged everyone to play our part by embracing a mindset of Vision Zero so that everyone can go home safe and healthy. She also commended the Jurong Island Vision Zero Cluster for initiating a series of activities promoting the Vision Zero movement including the recent learning journey hosted by PCS which shared their WSH programmes and best safety practices and is looking forward to see more of such sharing amongst Jurong Island’s companies in the near future. She also commented on “A Word of Care”, an initiative launched by the WSH Council calling upon everyone to show care and concern to those working around us by simply shouting out “A Word of Care” using colloquial words such as “ Uh”, “Eh”, “Oi” and “Bro” whenever we see someone about to carry out an unsafe act.
The event ended with three resounding safety cheers from every attendee to reaffirm their commitment to continuously improving our safety and health at work.
Throughout the three weeks campaign period, an array of interesting activities and exciting programmes including health and safety talks, bulletins and quiz contests was organised for the Complex employees and contractors.
The closing ceremony was held on 25th July at The Polyolefin Company (S) Pte Ltd (TPC) Plant Training room, with a welcome speech by the Chairman of the Complex HSE Campaign 2019 Organising Committee followed by handing over of the Complex HSE Flag to Denka Singapore (Private) Limited (DSPL) and Ethoxylates Manufacturing Private Limited (EMPL), the organising chairs for Complex HSE Campaign 2020.
